24-Hour Stay in Phuentsholing
Phuentsholing serves as the main gateway to Bhutan for visitors entering the country by road. Indian tourists may stay within the designated Phuentsholing border area for up to 24 hours without the payment of the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). This allows visitors to explore the town, visit cultural and recreational attractions, enjoy local cuisine, and experience Bhutanese hospitality before proceeding to other destinations within the Kingdom. Visitors planning to travel beyond the designated border area are required to complete the necessary travel formalities and pay the applicable SDF.
Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
All visitors to Bhutan contribute to our economic, social, and cultural growth through the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). This fee funds crucial projects like free healthcare, education, sustainability, conservation projects, cultural endeavors, and infrastructure improvements, ensuring tourism benefits are reinvested in local communities. The SDF is USD 100 per person per night, however guests from India pay Nu. 1200 per person per night.
There is a concessionary levy of 50% on the SDF for children between the ages of 6-12 years and exemptions of SDF for children aged 5 years and below.
What Can Do in Phuentsholing
Paro International Airport is Bhutan’s only international airport and serves as the primary gateway for visitors arriving by air. Situated at an altitude of approximately 2,235 metres (7,332 feet) above sea level and surrounded by majestic Himalayan mountains, it is considered one of the world’s most scenic airports. The airport is located about one hour’s drive from Bhutan’s capital city, Thimphu.
Bhutan is served by two national airlines, Drukair – Royal Bhutan Airlines and Bhutan Airlines, which operate regular flights connecting Bhutan with several international destinations, including Bangkok, Delhi, Kolkata, Kathmandu, Singapore, Guwahati, Bagdogra, Mumbai, and Gaya.
VISA
All visitors, except those from India, Bangladesh, and Maldives, need a visa to enter Bhutan. The visa process includes paying a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of US$100 per day for adults (with reduced rates for children) and a one-time, non-refundable visa application fee of US$40. You can submit a visa permit application online or have your Tour Operator or hotel handle it for you. If applying personally, you can also include details for fellow travelers, as long as you possess the necessary information for each individual.
FORMAL DRESS
Bhutanese people take great pride in their cultural traditions and national identity. Visitors are encouraged to dress modestly and respectfully, particularly when visiting religious sites, monasteries, temples, dzongs, and other places of cultural significance.
When entering sacred sites, clothing should cover the shoulders and knees, and hats should be removed as a sign of respect. Comfortable attire is suitable for most sightseeing activities; however, modest dress is appreciated throughout the country.
For official events, ceremonies, or visits to government offices, Bhutanese citizens wear the national dress, Gho for men and Kira for women. While international visitors are not required to wear national dress, they are encouraged to dress formally and respectfully when attending official functions.
Dzongkha is Bhutan’s national language and is spoken throughout the country. Learning a few basic phrases can enrich your travel experience and help you connect with local communities during your visit.
